Worn by: Robert De Niro as Frank Sheeran
Reference: Mathery-Tissot Vintage
Brand: Mathery-Tissot
The gaudy Mathery-Tissot (rectangular gold case with diamond-set bezel, gold dial, flat gold bracelet)—presented to Sheeran by Hoffa himself at a union banquet—is the film's most symbolically loaded watch. Its diamond-set bezel and gold construction represent the corrupted American Dream: union power turned into mob tool. Hoffa gifts Sheeran this status symbol as a reward for loyalty, yet that same loyalty will force Sheeran to murder the man who gave it to him. Every time the watch appears on screen (and Scorsese gives it significant screen time), it reminds us of the bond between these men and the terrible cost of Sheeran's choices. Unlike the subtle watches in GoodFellas, this deliberately ostentatious piece reflects how labor unions in the 1960s-70s became vehicles for displaying wealth—when working men could afford (or be gifted) diamond-studded gold watches, something fundamental had changed in American society. The watch is simultaneously a trophy and a chain.
